II. chance meeting

V. limited resources

[ she's holding her breath waiting for his answer, her eyes wide as saucers when she peers up into his face, like everything in the entire world is hanging on his answer. it isn't of course, but nonetheless it certainly feels that way.

but then his answer comes, and she can't help but break into a warm, if shy smile, her gaze lowering again. ]

Yes, all right.

[ she says, still smiling even if she can't meet his eyes again just yet. ]

I'd like that.

[ be still her heart!! she's never been so glad to be wrong. ]

Y-you would?

[ He can't help the genuine surprise in his voice. Even after his flub a few minutes ago, she...still would go on a date with him? She's giving him a second chance, even though he's an unmitigated disaster?

Oh, man. Oh, man, she's a keeper for sure.

His features crack into a vibrant grin, another laugh upon his breath. ]

Great! Great. It's settled, then. I'd be a grand old time! I promise.

[ yeah, silly as it is she can't help but grin like a twitterpated fool, chewing her lower lip nervously, her eyes flickering back up to him intermittently.

What, um.. what day is it? The - the movie.

[ not.. today. she knows what date today is.

Oh! [ Right. That's a little detail that might be...good to know. Luckily, he has the answer to that question on hand!

He reaches into his pocket, fishing for his wallet. ]

Hang on, lemme just - [ Flipping the fold open, Prompto pulls out a ticket to the event. Because he...already bought tickets. Yep. ]

Next Friday! At eight. Does that work for you?

[ He might have been...a little excited to ask her. ]

[ even if it isn't, she'll make it work. whatever she's got planned for friday can wait, it doesn't matter, if it means getting to see him again so soon, rather than waiting to hopefully run into him at the arcade on chance alone.

she furrows her brow as she glances at the tickets in his hands, then up to his face again. ]

You already have tickets?

[ Ah, there's that choking nervousness again!

Prompto stuffs the wallet back into his pocket, as if that is somehow going to make her forget she ever saw them. Oh man... ]

Aha - haha - y-yeah, guess I got a little excited, huh? I just, uh, knew we were doing this, and, uh...

[ AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ]

Oh - hey - look, the stars're starting to come out!

[ He points to the sky, helpfully, in case she doesn't know where the stars are. ]

[ okay, okay.. she gets it. gets it enough to blush rosy pink again, smiling down at her hands. he'd thought that far ahead? god she's so glad she mistook his intentions. maybe he's.. not ready to kiss her, but - but a second date is still good, right?

it's good.

thankfully he offers a distraction, and it's an absolutely awful one, but she'll take it. ]

.. so they are.

[ and up in the sky even, thanks for the tip, prompto. ]

I hope you're hungry.

[ because okay it's.. probably done now. alisaie skitters away to gather up two bowls, two spoons and a ladle, eager to have something to do with her hands. ]

[ Now that she mentions it, and they've moved past that unfortunate speedbump he threw in their road...

He pats his stomach. ]

Ravenous! It smells amazing, Alisaie!

[ And if he's stuffing his face, he'll spare the both of them from him saying anything stupid for a short while! ]

Good, it's one of the few things I can cook that likely won't kill you, so enjoy.

[ she's not a great cook prompto.. consider this before eventually consider marrying her. it's takeout every night, or prompto is gonna have to learn to cook.

but she sits again beside him, lifting the lid off of the pot to ladle a healthy helping into one of the bowls and passing it off to him. ]

[ Hey, he's picked up a thing or two from Iggy, like, grilled cheese sandwiches, it's fine...they'll be fine.

He takes the bowl from her, filling his lungs with the scent of the stew. ]

Oh, I will enjoy! Here goes the taste test... [ Not that he's expecting it to taste anything but wonderful, and a moment later he sticks a forkful of the stew into his mouth, taking the appropriate amount of time to "build suspense" and suss out the taste of the food. It's... ]

Yep, heart's still beating! Your theory pans out.

[ It's really good. ]

[ grilled cheese and takeout forever, not a bad life.

alisaie's watching him with bated breath though, while he shovels in a mouthful. it's nothing special really, vegetables and stock and spice, nothing terribly mindblowing, but still she smiles when he, in fact, does not die. ]

There's nothing quite like the flavor of fresh meat.

[ she says, and realizes after that that's kind of. a weird thing to say. ]

[ Ah, if all it takes to make her happy is not dying, he might be able to handle being in a relationship with her okay... ]

Uh - right! Fresh off..the bone is the way to go!

[ And he's going to put another forkful in his mouth before he can think about Mr. Fluffybuns and his family. ]

Just think of this - when the zombie apocalypse happens, you'll be way better off than most people.

[ yeah prompto all you need is a pulse so you're doing great so far ]

I.. had not thought of it that way.

[ but she's definitely considering it now?? she knows how to fight and she can cook wild animals, that puts her ahead of the curve for sure. she just needs to learn how to gun from prompto and she'll be all set. ]

Knowing how to shoot would also come in quite handy. I propose a team-up.

Yeah? [ He chuckles, eyes sparkling. They really would make quite the pair in a hypothetical zombie apocalypse. ] We'd watch each other's backs, live in the woods, set some zombie traps...

[ He makes a face as he takes another bite. ]

What does it say about me that the worst-sounding part about that is the living in the woods part?

[ alisaie shakes her head and casts him a judgmental stare, one brow arched high, though there's still a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. ]

Are you truly not enjoying yourself at all, out here?

[ ...Ah.

Okay, this is his chance! Take a deep breath, and be cool, Argentum. A tall order, but she's served him up so well.

He sets down his empty bowl, and slants a smile at her. ]

Oh, there's a few things I'm definitely enjoying.

as far as all the things he could have said are concerned, that's not actually too bad. alisaie's eyes flicker up to his face for a moment before she quickly looks away, unable to suppress her smile, or the soft rosy blush rising to her cheeks. her spoon clinks against her bowl as she sets it down beside his. ]

I take it you are not referring to the hard ground or attentive mosquitoes.

[ He's trying to be coy and flirtatious here, it's nothing short of a miracle that he actually got those words out without choking. Color flares in his cheeks at her following remark, but he started this. He can keep it going!

Hopefully. ]

Mm...nope! Not the creeping cold or the bad cell service, either.

[ He doesn't take his eyes off her, or he'll lose his nerve. ]

You wanna...watch the stars for a bit?

I would like that very much.

[ like any good nerd, alisaie is fond of and invested in astronomy (and she also enjoys quiet activities with few to no people), so watching the stars is rather an appealing activity for her. of course, it.. helps that it's with him, the idea of it foolishly, embarrassingly romantic.

stacking their bowls together and setting them aside, alisaie slides the stew pot to the edge of the rack and away from the lick of the flames to keep it from burning up while they're away, before she's standing and dusting herself off. ]

There's a good clear hillside some thirty yards to the South.

[ vague gesturing ]

[ Okay, okay, they're doing this. They're going stargazing, which in and of itself is, like, totally a baller move. She seems very keen on it, and even has a spot picked out for them to go. If he can just...not mess this up...maybe he can make up for his flubs from earlier. ]

Great! G-great - let's, uh - go. There.

[ With a deep breath, he reaches out, hand trembling as he takes hers in his once again. ]

[ his hand slips into hers and she's all fucked up all over again, blushing hot, heart hammering, completely an idiot. thankfully she doesn't have to look at him to tug him away from camp and off in the direction she'd indicated, so maybe he doesn't see her red hot ears or stupid, dizzy smile.

thirty yards is not a long walk though, and alisaie is perhaps walking a little more quickly than normal due to her nerves, so it's not long before the trees thin and they arrive. the clearing is large, the hillside carpeted with comfortable, springy grass, the dark sky yawning open above them. ]

W-well.. this is it.

[ she is both simultaneously ready to start right now and also cursing herself for getting here so quickly.. life is hard. ]

[ It's a good thing she doesn't try to start up conversation as they walk to the hill, because his tongue feels like lead in his mouth, so wholly consumed by the feeling of her warm hand in his. It's even okay that she doesn't glance over at him, because he would see a similar expression to her own on his face. For something so wonderful, it sure has his heart hammering a mile a minute.

They make it to the hill, and with a gentle tug on his hand, he sits on the grass, legs stretched out in front of him. ]

Wow...you weren't kidding. This is some view.

[ But he's only partly talking about the stars. ]

[ he tugs her hand, and alisaie lowers herself to sit beside him, her long legs folded up neatly beside her, her face tipped up toward the stars because she's still far too flustered to look at him just yet. ]

It is.

[ a dry swallow. ]

I used to do this quite often when I was young. I've always enjoyed.. looking above myself, beyond myself. There is so very much out there, and it's so.. exciting.

[ surprise she's been a nerd since childhood, didn't see that coming did you ]

[ NOPE. It's not surprising in the least, but it's so endearing, listening to her talk about watching the night sky like this. Their hands sit clasped between them, his heart still beating a mile a minute, but...he's less freaked out about it, here. This is a good kind of excitement, an energy in the air that's buzzing around them, and it's intoxicating. ]

It really makes you stop and think of your place in all this, huh? [ A light chuckle. ] I mean, not to get all philosophical, or anything...but you know what I mean? Every day things change down here, but the sky's still up there, always the same.

[ her heart is fluttering just the same, like a hummingbird in her chest, and she's sure he must be able to feel it through their linked hands, however silly that might seem. ]

Maybe that is how others see it, but not me. When I look up there, I do not feel insignificant, I feel.. a part of it all. There's so much going on here, but imagine how much else is happening there. Stars dying and being reborn, galaxies moving at impossible speeds, new life waiting to be found.

[ a slow, soft smile tugs at her mouth, her fingers in his daring a gentle squeeze. ]

Perhaps somewhere, there are others watching the distant light of our star and wondering all the same things. I suppose it makes the idea of being flustered about a - a date - seem.. silly.
