scenarios ACTION

① Skrull Invasion → You're on planet Earth and the Skrull are coming! Are you ready to fight? Perhaps the better question is...are you really sure your friends are who you think they are?
② Sparring → There's few better ways to see what you're made of than to face off against your fellow heroes! Enter the sparring ring and give it all you've got. Or perhaps you wind up facing an old friend in the Grandmaster's Contest of Champions!
③ Chitauri Assault → Time to take down hordes and hordes of alien goons! Maybe they brought their space whales, too. They're bringing the party to you!
④ In Pursuit → Your enemies are fleeing and it's up to you to pursue them and bring them to justice!

[Dude, heck yeah! I'm down for whatever you've got cooked up. Maybe something science-related for them to bond over while trying not to think of the miserable shitshow that happened recently (and failing)? Lord knows the kid'll have plenty of projects he's half-exploding in Stark's lab lbr.]

Steve pursed his lips, his arms still folded but his stance shifted from on-guard to something looser, and slightly more arrogant. "You're here in this 'remote forest', on this backwater planet, with your brother. Keeping a pretty close eye on you, huh? For all he says you're just 'misguided'and he still believes in you - which is admirable, I will say - just seems like he's watching you awful close. Like maybe he doesn't trust you not to go genocidal again if he doesn't keep a tight reign on your leash."

Steve opened his eyes at the voice, and couldn't help the smile that tugged at his lips at finding an upside-down Natasha looking at him, ubiquitous coffee mug in hand. "I think at this point it's more like early day. Can't sleep, that's all." He'd learned early on that while he could fall asleep at the drop of a hat if he needed to, when there was downtime and he wasn't exhausting himself, his body needed about a quarter of what everyone else needed, and refused to sleep any more than that. "Too much energy I can't burn off, I guess."

He glanced again at her coffee mug. "Can't sleep, or is this just a refueling before going back to being a genius?"

Loki nodded, chuckling.

"It's true. I have to say, it's the first time in my life I've felt pride in him. It turns out he does learn, eventually."

...Shit. Steve raised a hand and pinched his thumb and forefinger over his lips, to hide the reluctant grin he was fighting to suppress. It wasn't funny. It wasn't.

...except Loki was so unapologetic about the whole thing, which really should have pissed him off - but he also wasn't mad about being thwarted (temporarily, Steve was sure), it was... Well, he wasn't sure what it was. But for some reason it made him want to laugh.

After a couple moments, when he had his face under control, he lowered his hand enough to give Loki a deadpan look and tell him, "You're horrible. You know that?"

Loki let her take some of his weight, but not too much. It was true that Thor was both taller and bulkier than Loki, but Loki was by no means a small man.

"Has he been here?" he gasped. "Large purple man who wants to wipe us all out?

No!! [Hulk barks in response, shooting a look right at her, before he looks back down at the chair.]

Chair is too puny!! Hulk hates it! [With that, he petulantly kicks the fallen chair's remains across the room.]

"Literally everyone is aware of that, Captain," Loki replied, his tone almost bored. "But I'm horrible with style and class. What's driven you underground, though? Nothing half so stylish nor classy, I expect."

Steve has found, in very recent history, that he's stopped giving a lot of fucks about things. Loki's going to hear about it eventually anyway, right? Thor's probably getting the story right now from T'Challa, and he'll think nothing of sharing it with his brother, Steve is sure. So why not tell him?

"I refused to sign a treaty that would make it impossible to help anyone until a committee of politicians agreed to give the green light, which made me a fugitive, compounded by the fact that I refused to let said government keep my best friend held prisoner for things he'd had no control over doing."

He wasn't going to get into the whole personal-fight-with-Stark thing. That was still a little too raw, even now.

Loki nodded, considering that for a moment.

"Perhaps you should have let me take the planet while you had the chance," he suggested mildly. "You and your friends could have joined me as the ruling class."

What?! No, you're not! Gamora is clearly--

[ He glances over at the woman he has the hots for but is also implying that she's old and quickly backtracks. ]

I mean, y'know, n-not... you're definitely older, little girl, like--

[ Now the girl is glaring at him as well. ]

You know what? You're both very beautiful evenly aged ladies, how about that? Name's Star Lord, by the way.

[ IS HE HITTING ON HER NOW?! help... ]

Ha! Nice try, kid! We got elevators in space. Know what we call them? They're called-- w-well, they're called elevators, too, but my point is, I have yet to be blown away by this magical tour.

[ Notice he's not giving him a firm no just yet. He's probably just stringing (haha) poor Spidey along like the rest of the guys. Maybe. He likes him more than Happy does, at least! ]

Steve shook his head, but there was as much exasperation in it as disgust. Was this how Thor felt around Loki all the time? Vaguely charmed, even while disapproving of his actions?

"No. I don't believe anyone should be 'ruled', not like that. Everyone should have a voice. Should have a choice." He paused, then shook his head again. "Plus, there's no way you would let any of us have that much power. Risk an uprising against you? No," he said again, definitively. Loki was a hell of a lot of things - an idiot definitely wasn't one of them, though, Steve had to give him that.

"Just busy," Natasha agreed with a shrug, which could have meant both options or neither. She took another long sip as she eyed him, then wordless scooted around the couch and shoved at his legs until he moved them enough to give her space to sit down.

"You could call me, you know." If he wanted company, that was. Odds were that she was going to awake, and Tasha couldn't couldn't honestly say she'd mind if he woke her up. But that was straying a bit too close to thoughts she didn't want to deal with at the moment.

Luckily, there was a cup right there in her hands that she could busy herself with for a moment. Good job. "Want to watch something?"

[The snort Natasha gives speaks volumes as to how well she thinks trying to lie to Peggy is going to go, but Sam's clearly had a hell of a day so she can let that be. And because she is a very nice person, she scoots closer and runs her fingers down Sam's neck in a not-quite massage. Hey, it's the only part of her she can reach at the moment.]

But who's going to defend the American way?

[Which does not mean she's not still going to be an ass about it.]

[ The world is put to rights once again, but not without a price. Everyone remembers; the choking uncertainty on behalf of loved ones, profound grief at seeing them vanish before one's eyes, and last but definitely not least... the shock of slowly crumbling to ashes, wiped out of existence. How does one pick up the pieces afterward and go on like it didn't happen?

The answer is, you don't. There are a lot of sleepless nights to go around, and for some it's worse than others. Pepper thinks she should be used to concern-induced insomnia by now, but it still wears on her like before. Tony was a wreck when he returned from space, alone and injured, the weight of Peter's loss (and everyone elses, but especially Peter's) bogging him down like he'd lost his own son. Pepper doesn't think that was so very far from the truth; she'd watched with tears in her own eyes as he'd embraced Peter with such soul-deep relief the day those they'd lost were returned. Tony's nightmares after that were of memories and anxiety of something like that happening again. They've done that song and dance before, only this time Pepper is better able to deal with it. Doesn't mean it's any easier to witness, and her own hours of sleep have been similarly scarce since.

It's FRIDAY that finally narcs on Peter, informing Pepper of his presence in Tony's lab. It's not that the space is strictly speaking entirely and absolutely off-limits to Peter, but Pepper decides to check on the situation regardless. She's for once wearing flats instead of her usual heels that click satisfyingly with every step, sharp power suit exchanged for a more casual outfit of loose yoga pants and a black sweatshirt that's too large on her slender frame-- if that wasn't enough indication it's clearly been appropriated from Tony, the MIT logo emblazoned across the front is. She's not Virginia Potts, the no-nonsense CEO now; she's just Pepper.

Folding her arms over her chest, she stands by the entrance of the dimly lit lab and observes the boy poking around Tony's things for a moment. She would be lying if she claimed she hadn't been worried when she first heard about Tony's new protege. He was so young, and Tony could simply be too much; easily bowling over lesser men and women with the sheer force of his persona whether he meant to or not. But she'd been there in the background, on and off, listening in (not on purpose but it just happened) when Tony had been in contact with Peter over the Vulture incident. She'd done her own prodding in her end, though to her surprise Tony had needed less guidance than she'd thought in wrangling a teenager out to prove himself. Peter was smart, quick-witted and he had his heart in the right place. Tony hadn't been wrong to take interest, even if Pepper still has Strong Opinions about him taking the boy to face Captain America with him...

Pepper's lips pull into a small smile as she watches Peter's eyes light up with interest over the gadget he picks up and eagerly turns around in his hands. May Parker's request hadn't surprised Pepper -- she only hopes the time spent at the compound will help him.

Finally pushing off the doorway and into the lab proper, Pepper approaches Peter slowly with a friendly smile on her lips. ]

You know, if you're gonna poke around in here, maybe we should talk about actually getting you that internship. Just for real, this time.

[ Her smile twitches a little, and she adds innocently, ] Never too early to think about what looks good on those college applications.

[ half of what she sees around this building can be stomached on that premise alone: a stark is behind it. under any other circumstance, she might have already fainted from disbelief. but in the face of so much weirdness and so many trends, references, developments -- most of which she knows absolutely nothing about -- peggy has managed to maintain a remarkable stoicism.

[Peter takes the teacup to the needlessly complicated machine and starts right to work; he hadn't used it much but he's pretty intuitive about machinery and the tech in the Stark residence, mostly thanks to his penchant for figuring out these kinds of things — um, super spider suit notwithstanding. He still has to shoo Karen away from instant kill.

Also it spits out tea pretty dang fast. He turns and holds it in victory.]

Well, superhero's a pretty good one, I think. [He chuckles, shaking his head.] Let me tell ya, it's been a busy lifestyle. Even when it's just a day of stopping a robber or two, maybe helping a lady across the street — woo, it piles up with homework.

[Peter you're not making yourself sound very cool right now.

But he'd rather chatter about the small gigs than what had happened... — um.

What had happened.]

[He startles a little, as he tends to when he's caught red-handed with something. Peter isn't exactly the most subtle person when it comes to his feelings and reactions and general awkwardness; makes you wonder how he hasn't got caught being Spider-Man by anymore people at this point. But he's careful with the miniature laser cutter (this would be so cool for making little wooden figures for chess or tabletop or something), setting it back down where it'd come from.

Despite being caught, he's at ease again, because Pepper's really cool. Pepper's, like, someone he'd see being friends with May. He feels comfortable around her in a way he's not with Tony, mainly because he just wants to impress him and prove himself.
Because he doesn't want him to think he's not... good enough. When Tony asks how he's doing... he just says he's great, he's fine, nothing's up. He knows Tony's expecting a different answer one of these days. He knows. But...

Oh. He smiles, scratching the back of his head.]

You're starting to sound like Mr. Stark now.

[Not that it's a bad thing; he's gonna keep up with school, gonna work his butt off doing both. It'll be sleepless, but he's already kinda lousy with sleep, so...]

Well, something resembling "normal", at least. At the moment, there was no use in dwelling on all that had happened, life needed to move on, even for the Avengers and their allies.

Bruce was back to staying in Tony's place, almost like old times, and just like in old times, Bruce wasn't surprised to see activity in Tony's lab so late in day.]
